HyperBFT on Hyperliquid

HyperBFT is Hyperliquid's custom Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus, derived from the HotStuff protocol originally designed for Meta's Libra project. It is engineered around a single non-negotiable: deliver the latency high-frequency trading needs without giving up the security guarantees institutions expect.

Four architectural choices make this possible. Pipelined consensus lets validators advance multiple block stages in parallel, collapsing median end-to-end latency to roughly 0.1–0.2 seconds. Optimistic execution runs transactions before finalization when network conditions allow. One-block finality makes every fill irreversible the moment it is included — no probabilistic settlement, no reorg risk, which is what lets a matching engine live on-chain at all. And classic BFT guarantees are preserved, tolerating up to one third of malicious validators.

Block production is weighted by native HYPE staked, so validator economics are tied directly to network security: a validator that misbehaves risks the stake that grants it the right to produce blocks. The stack sustains roughly 200,000 orders per second today, with architectural headroom well beyond 1M.
